How to Use Affirmations as a Coach

May 10, 2022 by Liz Carter

Do Affirmations Have a Place in Your Coaching Practice?

affirmations can help coaching clinets improve results

Written by Mark Teahan Director of Education Programs

I recently had a phone call with a colleague and the topic of affirmations came up. It struck me as a coincidence because I was just working on the use of positive affirmations and motivational interviewing in coach training. If you are familiar with my coaching style and its impact on Spencer institute coaching programs, you know how and why we love and appreciate motivational interviewing. It is a standard for dialogue in the early stages of coaching and it’s important to do it right.

Depending on where you are in your coach training journey and experience, you might know this already. Largely through trial and error, previous generations of coaches fine-tuned and tweaked coaching deliverable services without any training related to psychology, where motivational interviewing has its roots. They were winging it. I know this to be a fact, I am guilty of it. [Read more…]

Coaching 2021: A Summary

November 11, 2021 by Liz Carter

Coaching 2021: A Summary

Time is such a powerful force, it even trickles into the coaching world. There was a time when a coach could skate by through working with clients, without any formal education! If you are already certified as a coach currently, you know how crazy this is. But this was how things were 20 or more years ago.

But advances in coach training do not come at us as quickly as advances in other areas, say, for example, science. Changes in the coaching profession come from either different techniques and training and how coaching services are delivered, or they are changed by events like our current pandemic.  This results in a shift, whereby millions of people are forced to – literally – look inward at their own health.  But the pandemic has also slowed down the already trickle speed of coach training. We didn’t really get to learn too much in 2020 apart from COVID19, we were focused on survival. But now that 2021 is nearly over, we’ve learned a few things in hindsight. [Read more…]

Creating a Rapport with the Unconscious Mind: Visualizing and Synesthesia

May 5, 2021 by Liz Carter

Creating a Rapport with the Unconscious Mind

How to Visualize

For many people, being aware of their internal images and voices is a simple matter of fact. For others, this skill is not so readily in their awareness. Being able to create a rapport with the unconscious mind to allow an awareness of inner thoughts is crucial for healing limitations from the past. We have identified several reasons for a person not having conscious access to their internal world:

Hyper-vigilance for safety.
Previous emotional trauma.
Not even knowing to “look for it.”
Habit or other familial patterning.
Not using both hemispheres of the brain in balance.

Future Pacing and Perceptual Positions

Future Pacing and Perceptual Positions

Future Pacing

The purpose of future pacing or attaching new learning to events in the future is to give us an opportunity to move forward into new adventures easily and with a deep sense of centeredness. A tangible example would be a dress rehearsal for an event, like a wedding or performance, so that the event will be well-practiced and familiar when it actually occurs. Mental future pacing is done in the imagination with visual imagery predicting success.

Components of Creating Precise and Purposeful Anchors

April 29, 2021 by Liz Carter

Components of Creating Precise and Purposeful Anchors

Anchors are the triggers or cues that create the meaning and/or response we give to circumstances and events. An anchor can be established in any of the modalities. Our purpose in this course for studying this phenomenon is to:

  • Identify an anchor and the response being elicited by it.
  • Learn how to release the knee-jerk response a limiting or outdated anchor can elicit.
  • Learn how to establish anchors for a proactive and positive response in ourselves and in others.

What are Anchors?

An anchor can elicit either a resourceful response that is appropriate for the situation, or it can elicit an unresourceful response, often out of the person’s awareness or control and at the extreme becomes a phobic reaction.

Anchors are the super glue that stick experiences together – behavioral habits and routines, sleep postures, that special “our song,” smells, even words are just anchors for certain ways of thinking based on our history and experiences.

What is Hemispheric Integration and How is it Used in Life Coaching?

April 14, 2021 by Liz Carter

What is Hemispheric Integration and How is it Used in Life Coaching?

Hemispheric Integration is a revolutionary technology discovered and developed by Allen C. Sargent, author of The Other Mind’s Eye: The Gateway to the Hidden Treasures of Your Mind.  This book is included FREE when you enroll in the Life Strategies Coach Training Program and Certification.

Hemispheric Integration with neuro-linguistics is founded on the scientific principles of how the brain processes information and influences thinking patterns. Once we understand this structure – limiting beliefs, phobias, and traumas can be resolved, and the client is then free to create lasting change, now and in the future. These tools and techniques can be used as a valuable adjunct in psychotherapy, and stand alone at the cutting edge in the evolution of personal growth. [Read more…]

Staying Healthy While Working From Home

Staying Healthy While Working From Home

Working from home as a certified coach or trainer is probably the most enviable of office environments. It can usually allow a certain degree of flexibility in your schedule and the possibility of spending more time with family. However, losing a workplace outside of the home can have a detrimental effect on our health. One of the biggest problems of working from home is inactivity.

Excessive sitting can affect your metabolism, increase blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol and lead to weight gain. Remaining in one posture for hours at a time can also affect the muscles in your back, neck, hip flexors, hamstrings and calves.

Tackling Your Client’s Fear of Change

Tackling Your Client’s Fear of Change

Tackling Your Client's Fear of Change

We all talk about balance, such as a work-life balance. This phrasing is a bit of a misguided metaphor that ignores the nuances and hard realities of our human experiences. To truly achieve balance, we are each forced to contend with the trade-offs. It’s almost as if our client feels that they have to give up one part of their life for another part to emerge… a better part. But we also know that we can’t have everything. [Read more…]

Staying Productive While Social Distancing

Staying Productive While Social Distancing

There’s no disputing that social distancing is vital to curbing the spread of COVID-19. How do you maintain some sense of normalcy during times of crisis, particularly when you’re socially isolated?

The world may have come to a stop, but our need to live a productive life hasn’t. Let’s face it…many of our clients were overbooked and overtaxed before the start of this pandemic. Thanks to orders from top health officials and our government, the marathon of life feels like it has been put on hold. The unsettled nature of this experience makes it challenging for many of your clients to settle into a new routine.

Experts say with our newfound focus, there is a good chance we will be productive through what promises to be a long haul. And who knows, we may end this time better than we started it. Here are some strategies to get you started!
