Is the Food Pyramid Still Relevant?

October 4, 2020 by Liz Carter

Is the Food Pyramid Still Relevant?

What is the Food Pyramid?

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created the food pyramid in 1992. It placed grains at the base of the pyramid, with veggies and fruits on the next largest tier. These were the foods that were supposed to comprise most of our diets. The next tier was split, with dairy on the left and proteins on the right. The tip of the pyramid was reserved for fats and sweets, with a recommendation to eat these sparingly. [Read more…]

Help Your Coaching Clients Practice Intuitive Eating

Help Your Coaching Clients Practice Intuitive Eating

plate of colorful and nutritious foodThe number of calories in a food is a minor piece to the larger puzzle of nutritional quality. Give your clients the tools to help them consciously and critically evaluate the food choices they make. Here are 5 nutrition areas to focus on when working with clients on intuitive eating:

Ingredients Should Be Your Focus

What are the ingredients in the food? Is the list long and involved and read like gibberish? Our bodies don’t need substances such as carrageenan, potato starch, and maltodextrin. [Read more…]

Nutrition Terms for Personal Fitness Chefs

April 26, 2019 by Liz Carter

Nutrition is about eating a healthy and balanced diet. Food and drink provide the energy and nutrients you and your clients need to be healthy. Understanding these nutrition terms may make it easier for you to help your clients make better food choices.

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP): a compound that is an immediate energy source for muscular contraction and other energy-requiring processes in the body.

Adequate Intake (AI): a recommended intake value based on observed or experimentally determined approximations or estimates of nutrient intake by a group (or groups) of healthy people, that are assumed to be adequate—used when an RDA cannot be determined.

Amino Acids: building blocks of protein.

Antioxidants: molecules that can prevent or reduce the actions of free radicals. The best way to consume antioxidants is through the diet with a high intake of fruits and vegetables.

Body Composition: the proportion of fat and fat-free weight on the body.

Nutrition & Food Coaching Career Ideas (Have You Thought of These)

February 11, 2019 by Liz Carter

Nutrition-and-Food-Coaching-Career-Ideas

You have many options about how you will offer your nutrition-related services.

Some experts offer in-person, one-on-one coaching for their clients.
Others offer the same service online. Still, others offer some type of hybrid program where the clients receive a portion of their coaching in-person and other aspects online via email, Skype, Zoom video, text and/or PDF documents.

Some nutrition and food experts are combining their efforts and offering personal fitness chef services or creating a meal prep business in addition to nutrition coaching.

In most cases, people hire you for food or nutrition services for 2 reasons.  First, they know they need to improve their nutritional habits.  Second, they are short on time and want services that save them time.  They are willing to pay top dollar for anything that saves them time.

Of course, many coaches work with entire families.

Why is it a great idea to help an entire family?

1. You improve your efficiency by working with more clients at a single location.
2. They get better results due to a group effort.
3. You get more people to refer you new clients.
4. Your rate for a family of 4 is higher than a single person.
5. It makes a great case study (social media) story for your business.

You may be wondering how you would run a food/chef/meal prep business.

The Epicure of Obesity: A Coaching Perspective

December 11, 2014 by jse

Are you aware that society labels people with diagnoses that are actually symptoms? Did you know treating symptoms causes a never-ending story leading to societal and self-disconnect, disillusionment and obesity in spirit, soul and body? Sound like a mouthful? If you answered yes, you are correct. The practice of institutional medicine is built upon a compartmentalized framework because the world views humanity from a fragmented perspective. Mental health issue? The world will attempt to fix what’s in your head. Physical malady? They will suggest surgery to remove your organs. Spiritual affliction? They will cast out demons and/or advise rabbinical repentance until you’ve developed ten more illnesses as a result of self-persecution. The system is flawed; separating soul (mind/ will/ emotions), body and spirit of personhood must cease right now. [Read more…]

Coaching Clients Through the Pain of Regain

December 5, 2014 by jse

The holidays are here!  This is the time we reconnect with family and friends and celebrate.  It’s a busy time that can prevent us from staying focused on our healthy lifestyle and fitness routine.  We eat foods generally reserved for these special occasions and have a few (extra) wonderful holiday drinks.  This time with others nourishes our souls which is so important! Unfortunately, it is also responsible for an average weight gain of between 5-8 pounds.  Once the holidays are over, it’s time to get back to our regular diet and fitness routines. This is when we will see the client’s that need a kick start or just validation that they are back on track with their fitness routines and healthy eating.

Eat More and Lose Weight

June 28, 2014 by jse

Eat more to lose weight…?…YES!

Most of you have probably heard or read that statement before, but immediately went “yeah right!”, and never took the time to find where this so called “fact” was coming from. Don’t feel bad cause that’s what most people do. But now is your chance to find out!

Here’s the deal. Your body is all about one thing…survival. It does not care what you look like. It only cares about doing what is needed to survive. It makes these decisions based on the daily decisions you make in regards to your physical activity, and your intake of calories. Oooh…there is that evil word, “calories”! It is evil, right?…Not necessarily. The big counting calorie fad has brain washed everyone into thinking that if they take in less calories, it means weight loss. Wrong. Here’s why:

There are a couple of things related to your caloric intake that will make you gain fat weight:
#1. How often you eat.
#2. The amount of calories that you take in.

From Binge Eater to Successful Wellness Coach

June 23, 2014 by jse

BINGE EATING DISORDER….. MY STORY
BY: JOSEPHINE CHAMPION

I was a binge eater for 20 years and began this way of eating when I was 8 years old. I would easily eat a whole box of cereal, ice cream bars and basically anything that I could find in the house.  I would eat when no one was looking and it became part of my life.  Even though I am Italian, everyone just thought it was a growing spurt and was a good eater.  My parents always cooked healthy meals, but when guests would come over, there would be desserts, soda, pizza etc.  Then I would love to eat any of the left overs.

Student Success Stories

Learning how to become a life coach at the Spencer Institute has been a great way for me to grow my coaching business. I really liked that I could work full time while learning life coaching on my own time schedule. Not only do I now have coaching clients, but I also attract more psychotherapy clients who choose me because I can offer coaching in addition to psychotherapy.
