Can a Green Living Lifestyle Help Prevent Disease?

The truth is, most of us would not be able to afford to pay for medical expenses directly out of pocket but when you combine our current healthcare crisis with this fact, it becomes unsettling to think of what might happen if our client needs treatment for a serious or terminal illness. This is why we have to look at taking our own health and our health care needs into our own hands. This involves becoming our own health advocate, of sorts, and to become familiar with the term “preventative medicine” in the more immediate sense.

Most professionals in the health and fitness or wellness industry already know and believe that most diseases can be prevented. This includes heart disease, Type II diabetes, obesity, some cancers and many more. Many health professionals believe that most chronic diseases have origins set in place decades before they become full-blown conditions. In this way, it is really important to seek a life of prevention now, and this is why we encourage clients to adopt a green living lifestyle.

If you think about it, our current system of medicine involves treating diseases after they are detected instead of preventing them beforehand. Therefore, it may make more sense for us to take full responsibility for our own health and to become more prevention minded now. One of the best and most direct routes to this is by living green. You probably don’t need to be told this but many of today’s most serious conditions and illnesses can be directly attributed to environmental pollutants, toxins and chemicals that are found and used every day by consumers. If we increase our awareness and knowledge of this fact, we can significantly lower our exposure to these toxic chemicals and even work toward a home that is detoxed from chemicals and pollutants to prevent the onset of chronic illness or disease. Some of these simple steps can save you thousands of dollars along the way and also reduce the chance of needing to enter into the medical system.

There are some important statistics to consider in a Green Living world – some you may already know but others are constantly changing due to evolving science.  Regardless, what really matters is if your client knows these facts:

  • It is estimated that one in three people will get cancer in the developed Western world.
  • While nearly 5% of all cancers are deemed hereditary, most result from damaged genes that mutate over time; this is believed to be the result of exposure to hormones in our food supply, tobacco smoke, sunlight and other toxic chemicals.
  • Nearly 65% of the population is overweight or obese.  Experts agree that this is  deadly for heart health. The heavier you are/higher your BMI, the greater the risk for heart disease.
  • At this time, the debate over preventing and treating some more serious diseases continues, as is the case with cancer.   Previously, it was believed that cancer cannot take hold of a healthy immune system. However, as an indicator of evolving science and greater study, some researchers have discovered that during the very first few days of development of a cancer, our immune system recognizes cancer cells not as abnormal cells requiring eradication immunotherapy works in this manner but as cells of the body that need to be protected.  But the message remains the same – preventing the onset of cancer is still ideal.

The above stated fact related to cancer isn’t limited to health and medicine.  It is time for us to look outward, to seek answers where other progressive countries have made significant strides in the prevention movement.  When one considers that the World Health Organization promotes prevention over treatments after the fact, it may be in our best interests to open our minds and broaden our thinking toward a greener way.

In the USA, some have been slow to come on board with the green living movement.  Why is this?  Is it due to believing that the status quo is good enough?  Or is it simply a lack of awareness.   Maybe both?

Therefore, the mission for a green living coach is to educate and inform clients in order to illuminate environmental pollutants and toxic chemicals from their daily lifestyle and routine. This also includes products used and their home environment they occupy so that clients can live a healthy life. But in addition to this, your efforts should also include persuading clients that they do not need to spend extra money on prescription drugs and medical treatments if they can prevent chronic illness or disease. We can also teach clients to reduce their energy consumption and footprint, their CO2 output and to save money on monthly bills. Every client will want that.
