What does it mean when you become a Certified Youth Performance Coach?
When kids and teens participate in physical activity, is it for fun, play or competitive sport? Youth Performance Coaching focuses on this specialty of coach training, zeroing in on players and athletes in their youth. Ages for this group can range from 3 until 18 years of age.
Spanning a period of time of growth and maturity before adulthood, experiences from participation can shape nearly everything about who are and what we become.
Becoming certified has many benefits. It allows you to expand your knowledge to serve a special population. For participants, it improves their overall sports experience by coaching from an informed position of authority. This will help to overcome the current problems with youth participation in physical activity which includes anything from poorly trained coaches or volunteers to overbearing, demanding parents – who jeopardize the quality of the sporting experience for young players.
With structured, formal training that zeroes in on this group, your credential will contribute to a growing collection of coaches who are more informed, more effective and successful in professional careers “coaching kids”. Both the CYPC and participants see the results and benefits.
Part of your education involves knowing what and whom you are coaching, especially when it includes a special population. Another perspective involves how you work (apply) what you have learned into the groups which you serve.
Coaches with a specialty are more valuable.
Coaches are an important link in the development of young athletes. They are not only responsible for providing technical instruction but also for creating a safe and positive environment that fosters growth and development. Coaches are role models, providing young athletes with a positive influence and guidance at a time when it is needed most!
A Certified Youth Performance Coach (CYPC) working with young players has to understand youth participants in organized sport, competitions and general physical activity. The CYPC has to understand the different needs of this important group; an 8-year-old T-ball player is not coached the same as a 12-year-old soccer player - for many reasons. We have a responsibility to coach youth participants intelligently. This, alone, may help ease the drop-out rate seen in youth sports.
Over time, we have studied and thus learned more about participants; this quest for knowledge related specifically to youths in our society comes from a need based on trends seen -namely, the positive attributes of participation and then keeping kids engaged in competition, organized games or sports. Up until recent times, the study of youth participation in sport has centered largely trying to understand very specific and unique aspects of a few elite participants – the very young kids who train with the most elite coaches with dreams of rising to Olympic level status. You can aim for a great coaching job like that if you have the skills, knowledge and abilities.
This specialty education and certification program builds on the fundamentals that elevate our understanding of everything related to this unique coaching specialty and the participants involved. It is the result of all the latest we know about young people participating in sports. We also look closely at the role of parents in this process.
Your course begins with an introduction which explains the basis for youth sport coach training.
Then it progresses to the following modules:
Lesson 1 – Learning About Participants
Lesson 2 – Coaching Principles and Participation
Lesson 3 – Planning Your Programs
Lesson 4 – Healthy Participants/Healthy Environments
Lesson 5 – Nutrition
Lesson 6 – When Young Athletes Get Hurt
Lesson 7 – Managing Your Program
Youth sport coaching helps develop self-discipline, time management skills, and a strong work ethic
It wasn’t until the rise in popularity of exercise and sport psychology that we started closely examining the mental and cognitive measures that relate to this age-based special population. This has now expanded into a whole new field that is still re-evaluating many fitness behaviors based on participation. Coaches that feel well-trained are more confident because they are better prepared to face the unknowns presented by their clients – which may now include children in groups. Combined with an emphasis on behaviors and outcomes for kids, youth performance coaches can provide the best experience possible for children and supporting parents.
Youth Performance Coaches play a crucial role in guiding, supporting, and instructing young athletes, helping them to develop their skills and abilities, while fostering a positive and supportive environment. The benefits of youth sport coaching go beyond the development of physical fitness and technical skills, as it can also promote essential life skills, sportsmanship, and self-discipline.
Why we need to improve youth coaching and coach training:
Provide better experience for kids in physical activity settings
Keep children engaged and active
Participants have better outcomes, often continuing into adulthood
Support children at age-appropriate levels of interaction
Understand the needs of participants at different ages
Coaches have more meaningful outcomes (success is not always winning)
The role of parents is understood and managed with respect

Results we have
helped create
Learning life coaching at the Spencer Institute has been a great way for me to increase my business base. I really liked that I could work full time while learning life coaching on my own time schedule. Not only do I now have coaching clients, but I also attract more psychotherapy clients who choose me because I can do coaching in addition to psychotherapy.
The Spencer Institute Coaching programs are informative while being exciting and cutting edge. Their variety of approaches to coaching holistically keeps my business fresh and me coming back for more.
I am a lifelong learner, and firmly believe no matter how much we know, we can always discover more!! My brother told me about Spencer Institute, and I thank him because it really amped up my skills in coaching clients. Being a busy mom, I absolutely loved the distance learning since it fits with my hectic schedule, and I was able to do the courses at my own pace!
I completed the personal fitness chef, fitness nutrition coach and kid’s nutrition specialist programs (some from NESTA) and I am so glad that I did. Most recently, I’ve been giving talks on healthy snacking to children and I am finding that it complements my cooking schedule. It’s a nice complement to the work I do in the kitchen. I just wanted to say thanks!
