Getting to Know Yourself: A Journey of Self-Understanding

Many people struggle with trying to identify who they are and where they are going in life. They contemplate their existence and often feel insecure about where they fit in this 21st Century fast paced tech savvy world that we live in. There is a constant need to belong to a group or to be a member of the “in” crowd. I encounter these people on a daily basis. When I approach them in dialogue the number one thing I realize is that they could tell me about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian getting married but could not answer the question of, “ Who are you?” The responses I get are usually something like, “ I am a writer, I am an educator, I am a model, I am designer.” I am often left feeling that I truly did not have an understanding of whom the individual was.

Exploration of oneself may seem scary to the individual who for years lived their lives based on what others said about him or her. However, what happens when you stop identifying yourself by what others label you as and begin to live your life outside of the labels. As a Holistic Life Coach one of the first questions I ask adults are; “ Who are you?” I revel in the answers I receive because they are often one dimensional and do not truly reflect who this person has been their entire lives.  Nevertheless, when I ask a small child who they are, they often provide the most innovative answers such as; “ I am a girl, I am a boy, I belong to my mommy and daddy, I am happy, I am sad…” the answers are endless and not as finite as the adults I encounter. Young children ten to know and understand  innately that they are parts of a whole. As adults we could learn from watching how our youngest children live their lives in the moment with out labels until the adults impede their ideologies on their thought process.

My goal as a Holistic Life Coach is to help individuals find infinite possibilities to who they are. Providing a nurturing environment that would allow the client to feel safe enough to explore their inner selves as important. Building strong relationships and finding strong commonalities allow for a safe feeling that will aide the client in living without judgment. It allows them to live in the moment without a fear of being labeled. As a result the relationships they begin to explore become more meaningful. Support and an environment that welcomes this mindset provision.
