Home-based and Online Sleep Science Coaching Business

In this lesson, you will learn 5 different ways to earn income as a Certified Sleep Science Coach.

Let’s start with the obvious.

We all sleep. We all enjoy quality sleep. Most people want more sleep. Many people don’t get quality sleep. Sleep is the most important part of your day for numerous reasons we will discuss below.

YES! Teaching Sleep Science is BIG BUSINESS. And, nearly all people need your help.

Here are some sleep facts to consider before we teach you how to successfully start and operate your sleep science coaching business:

Sleep Stages

There are two basic types of sleep:  rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep (which has three different stages).  Each is linked to specific brain waves and neuronal activity.  You cycle through all stages of non-REM and REM sleep several times during a typical night, with increasingly longer, deeper REM periods occurring toward morning.

Stage 1 non-REM sleep is the changeover from wakefulness to sleep.  During this short period (lasting several minutes) of relatively light sleep, your heartbeat, breathing, and eye movements slow, and your muscles relax with occasional twitches.  Your brain waves begin to slow from their daytime wakefulness patterns.

Stage 2 non-REM sleep is a period of light sleep before you enter deeper sleep.  Your heartbeat and breathing slow, and muscles relax even further.  Your body temperature drops and eye movements stop.  Brain wave activity slows but is marked by brief bursts of electrical activity.  You spend more of your repeated sleep cycles in stage 2 sleep than in other sleep stages.

Stage 3 non-REM sleep is the period of deep sleep that you need to feel refreshed in the morning.  It occurs in longer periods during the first half of the night.  Your heartbeat and breathing slow to their lowest levels during sleep.  Your muscles are relaxed and it may be difficult to awaken you.  Brain waves become even slower.

REM sleep first occurs about 90 minutes after falling asleep.  Your eyes move rapidly from side to side behind closed eyelids.  Mixed frequency brain wave activity becomes closer to that seen in wakefulness.  Your breathing becomes faster and irregular, and your heart rate and blood pressure increase to near waking levels.  Most of your dreaming occurs during REM sleep, although some can also occur in non-REM sleep.  Your arm and leg muscles become temporarily paralyzed, which prevents you from acting out your dreams.  As you age, you sleep less of your time in REM sleep.  Memory consolidation most likely requires both non-REM and REM sleep.

Sleepiness Causes Accidents

Sleep deprivation was a factor in some of the biggest disasters in recent history: the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill, the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, and others.

But sleep loss is also a big public safety hazard every day on the road. Drowsiness can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that fatigue is a cause in 100,000 auto crashes and 1,550 crash-related deaths a year in the U.S. The problem is greatest among people under 25 years old.

Studies show that sleep loss and poor-quality sleep also lead to accidents and injuries on the job. In one study, workers who complained about excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly more work accidents, particularly repeated work accidents. They also had more sick days per accident.

Sleep Loss Dumbs You Down

Sleep plays a critical role in thinking and learning. Lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways. First, it impairs attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem-solving. This makes it more difficult to learn efficiently.

Second, during the night, various sleep cycles play a role in “consolidating” memories in the mind. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t be able to remember what you learned and experienced during the day.

Sleep Deprivation Can Lead to Serious Health Problems

Sleep disorders and chronic sleep loss can put you at risk for:

  • Heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes

According to some estimates, 90% of people with insomnia — a sleep disorder characterized by trouble falling and staying asleep — also have another health condition.

Yes, your expertise is needed.

Sleep science is a billion-dollar industry. Coaching and consulting people, families and corporations on optimizing sleep is growing fast.  To many people need help, and there aren’t enough experts. Now is the time for you to complete your training and quickly launch your business you can run from home and online.

Here are 5 Ways You Can Generate Income:

Online coaching business helping individuals and families – Today, ask your friends, family and clients this simple question, “Do you always get enough quality sleep each night?”  We predict less that 25% of the people will say they get enough quality sleep each night.  Next, tell/ask them this… “I’m now considering becoming a Certified Sleep Science Coach. Would you like to learn proven, simple and effective strategies to quickly improve your sleep?” We predict 90% will say they want that service. Now you realize how many people want and need your help. You will be given the knowledge, skills, training and resources to offer online coaching to clients of different ages and with various health considerations. Coaching can be done by phone, text, Skype or Zoom.

You can also create online sleep science courses – These can be sold to customers all over the world. You learn exactly how to do this with the included online coach training modules. Your courses can include a manual, handouts, sleep journals, dream journals, video lessons, etc.  You can even “upsell” each order with the option to include online coaching.  You have the option of selling your online courses from your own blog, or on other sites where you get a lot more web traffic and do some type of revenue share with the site owner. These course platforms include the following: Fiverr, Udemy, Coursera and Skillshare. Each of these platforms get millions of visitors each month. You benefit from the traffic. Your cost is splitting the revenue.

Combine sleep coaching with fitness training (both in-person) – If you are working with clients in-person at your home, it’s easy to add sleep science coaching into a training/coaching monthly package. You have endless options of how to make combination offers.  You can create a package with 1 sleep coaching session for every 10 fitness training sessions. You can add sleep coaching to your health and wellness coaching business and jut charge a premium. Depending on your total skillset, you can do a combination of fitness, wellness, nutrition and sleep coaching.  It’s a far more complete combination of services.  You can create endless combinations of how many sessions of each service is given each month. It will all depend on the individual needs of your clients.  Of course, this can also be offered online.

Offer sleep coaching to corporations – grogginess, poor sleep, fatigue and serious sleep disturbances dramatically affect a company’s productivity.  In some cases, it also negatively affects safety at a company as well. In case you are wondering, corporate health and wellness is big business. The Spencer Institute has a complete certification course on this topic to help you gain additional skills.  You can generate income working with corporations in any/all of the following ways: Create educational products specific to “Executive Sleep” (as an example), create online courses for human resource departments to distribute to employees, offer keynote speaking presentations at human resource conventions/meetings, offer “lunch and learn” events for employees, write a book for human resource professionals, and any combination of these income models.
