Why are Social and Environmental Determinants of Health So Impactful?

When we think about factors that affect our health, we often focus on our weight, physical activity, stress levels, quality of sleep, and of course the foods we are putting into our bodies. However, there are many other factors that can impact our health and well-being that are separate from our weight, eating habits, and stress levels or sleep quality. Social and physical environments have a big impact on our health, too. Here are some of the most important factors to consider.

Social Connections

Having strong social connections, friendships, and family connections is crucial for both physical and mental health. Research has consistently shown that people who have strong social support systems tend to be healthier and live longer than those who are socially isolated.

Here are some ways in which social connections can impact physical and mental health:

  1. Reduces stress: Having a strong social support system can help reduce stress levels. When we have people we can turn to for emotional support or help with practical matters, we are better able to manage stress. This can have a positive impact on our physical health by reducing the risk of stress-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and immune system disorders.
  2. Promotes healthy behaviors: People who have strong social connections are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. This is because social networks can provide positive role models and support for healthy behaviors. For example, if your friends are into hiking, you are more likely to start hiking regularly as well.
  3. Boosts immunity: Having strong social connections can also boost the immune system. Studies have shown that people with strong social support systems have a stronger immune response to vaccines and are less likely to catch infectious diseases such as the flu.
  4. Improves mental health: Social connections are important for mental health as well. People who have strong social support systems are less likely to experience depression and anxiety and are more likely to have better self-esteem and a positive outlook on life.
  5. Increases longevity: Studies have consistently shown that people who have strong social connections live longer than those who are socially isolated. This is because social connections provide a sense of purpose and belonging, which can be important factors in maintaining good health as we age.

Spending time with friends and family, participating in social activities, and volunteering can all help build and maintain strong social connections.

Environmental Factors

The environment we live in can have a major impact on our health. Exposure to air pollution, toxic chemicals, and other environmental hazards can increase our risk of a range of health problems, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders. Eating foods that are contaminated with pesticides or other toxic substances can also have negative health effects.

It is important to note that the effects of environmental hazards on health can be complex and may depend on a number of factors, including the type and level of exposure, the duration of exposure, and the individual’s age, gender, and overall health status. Additionally, some populations may be more vulnerable to the effects of environmental hazards, including children, pregnant women, and individuals with preexisting health conditions.

In order to reduce the risks associated with environmental hazards, it is important to take steps to reduce exposure. This may include avoiding or reducing exposure to known environmental toxins, such as pesticides or air pollution, and taking steps to minimize exposure in the workplace or home. Additionally, regulations and policies aimed at reducing environmental hazards can help to protect public health.

Mental Health

Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 19.1% of U.S. adults (ages 18 and older) experienced a mental illness in 2020, with 4.8% experiencing a severe mental illness.

Mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, can have a major impact on our quality of life.

Here are some specific ways in which untreated mental health disorders can impact someone’s life:

  1. Impaired daily functioning: Mental health disorders can make it difficult for individuals to carry out daily activities, such as going to work, attending school, or even taking care of themselves. For example, someone with severe depression may struggle to get out of bed or find the energy to complete basic tasks.
  2. Social isolation: Mental health disorders can also cause social isolation, as individuals may withdraw from social interactions and have difficulty forming and maintaining relationships. For example, someone with a social anxiety disorder may avoid social situations and have difficulty making friends. Mental health disorders can also cause family and relationship problems, as individuals may have difficulty communicating and relating to others. This can lead to conflict and strain on relationships.
  3. Financial problems: Untreated mental health disorders can lead to financial problems, as individuals may struggle to work and maintain employment. This can lead to financial instability, poverty, and difficulty accessing resources such as healthcare.
  4. Physical health problems: Mental health disorders can also have an impact on physical health. For example, depression and anxiety have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and other physical health problems.
  5. Substance abuse: Individuals with untreated mental health disorders may turn to substance abuse as a way of self-medicating or coping with their symptoms. This can lead to addiction, health problems, and further exacerbate mental health issues.

Untreated mental health disorders can have a profound impact on the quality of someone’s life. Despite the prevalence of mental health disorders, many people do not receive treatment. According to NIMH, only 47.28% of U.S. adults with mental illness received mental health services in 2021. It’s important to seek help if you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health disorder, as they can be treated with therapy and/or medication.

Access to Healthcare

Access to healthcare is essential for good health. Regular checkups and preventative screenings can help catch health problems early, when they are easier to treat. Unfortunately, many people don’t have access to healthcare, either because they can’t afford it or because they live in areas where healthcare is not readily available.

Unfortunately, healthcare access is not equally distributed across the population. In the United States, 30 million people do not have health insurance, and many more have insurance that does not adequately cover the costs of healthcare. This lack of access can lead to delayed or forgone medical care, with potentially serious consequences. For example, people without health insurance are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer than those with insurance and are more likely to die from preventable conditions.

Access to healthcare is particularly important for people with chronic health conditions, who require ongoing care and medication management. Without access to healthcare, these individuals may not receive the care they need to manage their conditions, leading to worse health outcomes, higher healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life.

Furthermore, easy healthcare access is important for preventative care, including regular check-ups and screenings. This can help catch health issues early when they are easier and less expensive to treat. Without access to preventative care, people may not receive necessary screenings, leading to undiagnosed health conditions and poorer health outcomes.

Access to healthcare is also important for mental health care, including therapy and medication management. As we noted earlier, mental health disorders can have a significant impact on a person’s overall health and well-being. However, many people do not receive adequate mental health care due to a lack of access to care.

Healthcare access also impacts healthcare costs overall. Without access to preventative care and early treatment, health issues may worsen, leading to more expensive and extensive medical interventions later on.

To address these disparities, healthcare policymakers have implemented a number of programs aimed at expanding access to healthcare, including the Affordable Care Act, which has helped to reduce the number of uninsured individuals in the United States. However, there is still a significant gap in access to healthcare, particularly for low-income and marginalized populations.

Income

Income can have a significant impact on health outcomes and may be the greatest factor impacting longevity. Individuals with lower incomes may face greater challenges in accessing healthcare and resources that support healthy behaviors, which can contribute to a range of health problems. Understanding the impact of income on health is important for developing effective strategies to promote health and prevent illness. By addressing income-related health disparities, individuals and communities can work to improve health outcomes and promote greater well-being.
