Using Storytelling to Become a Better Public Speaker

Is Storytelling The Secret Ingredient to Making Any Speech More Memorable?

Communication is key to success in any endeavor. Whether it be a job interview, a presentation, or even a simple conversation, the ability to effectively communicate is paramount. Professional speaking helps to improve one’s communication skills by allowing them to practice their words and ideas in front of an audience. This not only helps to refine their communication skills but also helps to build confidence.

Confidence is a crucial element to success in any field. Public speaking helps to build confidence by providing a platform for one to practice their words and ideas. Having the ability to express oneself and engage with an audience allows one to gain a greater understanding of their own beliefs and opinions. This helps to build confidence and allows one to better express themselves in any situation.

What is storytelling?

Storytelling is a powerful tool for communication, teaching, and entertainment. It can involve using words, images, music, or any other medium to create a narrative or plot. The goal of storytelling is to evoke emotion and create an emotional connection between the storyteller and the audience.

How does storytelling make you a better public speaker?

Storytelling can make you a better public speaker by helping you engage with your audience and create a more compelling presentation. It can add an emotional component to your speech that will draw listeners in and help them to connect with your message.

Additionally, storytelling can help you to make a more memorable impression on your audience and keep them engaged throughout your talk. Lastly, it can help to illustrate points and make them more understandable and relatable to your audience.

How do you become a better storyteller?

Tell A Personal Story: If you want to inspire, motivate, and influence people, you’re most likely to succeed if you tell a personal story. Here’s how you do it. Tell a story about a challenge that you faced in your life and how you overcame it. It doesn’t have to be a challenge that took place in a professional setting. You can pick any situation from your private life as well. Just make sure that the lesson learned is relevant to your audience.

Use Emotions: Emotions are the main reason why we remember things. Telling a purely data-driven story will often have no effect on the audience. We don’t remember facts unless there is an emotional component attached. If you want to affect behavior and change mindsets, you need to bring emotions into your story.

Use body language: Body language can play an important role in storytelling. Make eye contact with your audience, stand up straight and use your hands to emphasize your points. By using gestures, facial expressions, posture, and eye contact, body language adds an extra layer of detail to the narrative, helping to bring the story to life. It can also be used to illustrate relationships between characters and to emphasize key moments in the story. By using body language, a storyteller can create a vivid and engaging experience for the audience.

Cut Unnecessary Details: Beginner storytellers often think that “the more details, the better”. As such they go into great length, describing every single detail, from location to attire. This can work if you’re writing a fiction book, but not if you’re telling a story in a professional setting. Most leadership stories fall into the range of 3-5min. Very rarely do you have the time to go into 15-minute-long stories. Therefore, every word that you use should serve a very specific purpose.

Bonus Public Speaking Tips

These public speaking tips will help you nail your next speech or presentation that you give to a group of people:

Focus on Your Voice: Work on your vocal delivery and make sure you are speaking loudly enough to be heard and clearly enough to be understood.

Be Prepared: Make sure you are well-prepared for your speech and have all of your notes and materials ready ahead of time. Visual aids such as PowerPoint slides, pictures, and videos can help you engage with your audience and keep their attention.

Be Confident: Believe in yourself and your message. You will be able to communicate your ideas more effectively if you are confident in yourself. Take a few deep breaths and relax before you begin speaking. If you’re nervous, it will be more difficult to speak clearly. Be prepared to adjust on the fly if something unexpected happens during your speech.

Have Fun: Don’t be afraid to have some fun with your speech. This will help you relax and make it more enjoyable for your audience.

How can professional speaking improve your career?

Professional speaking can help to improve your career by increasing your visibility, credibility, and reputation in the field. It can provide you with the opportunity to network with other professionals and build relationships with key people in your industry.

Additionally, it can be an avenue to showcase your expertise and gain recognition for your ideas. Presenting at conferences and events can also open up opportunities to speak at other events and create further opportunities in your career.

The Professional Speaker Certification course was created for professionals who understand the compounding benefits of sharing your business or lifestyle idea with large groups of people and do so in a way that makes you look prepared, intelligent, and convincing.
