What Does it Take to be a Health or Wellness Coach?

4 min read

As coaches, we all can relate to those times when people say to us, “what does a health wellness coach do?” A common inquiry: Rather than provide a straightforward answer, we might start by saying we want to deliver the passion and power of coaching through intimate small-group sessions and build upon that. As sessions transition with time, clients see this as symbolic of renewal and growth. The coach is also growing during this time, too.

When asked to define health and wellness, each coach might offer a different perspective, highlighting the deeply personal nature of the journey toward their own well-being. From cultivating happiness within oneself to establishing resilient support systems, wellness encompasses a rich collection of physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions for the coach to factor into the big picture. Through exploring different intervention strategies, clients gain insights into crafting their paths toward a more vibrant and fulfilling life. It might seem like trial and error at times, but coaching works really well when its done right.

Central to any coaching philosophy we choose to emulate is the belief in fostering authentic relationships built on trust and mutual respect. This is another common theme built into the coach personality and mindset. By creating safe spaces for exploration and growth, the coach empowers their client to become the architects of their transformational journeys. Through the art of inquiry and reflection, clients are encouraged to unearth their inner wisdom and embrace their innate potential for growth and self-discovery.

When it comes to the tools of their trade, experienced coaches emphasize the power of open-ended questioning and appreciative inquiry and other elevated communication strategies. By inviting clients to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment, they facilitate a deeper understanding of their needs and desires. Through this process of self-exploration, clients are empowered to tap into their inner resources and chart a course toward lasting change and fulfillment.

Beyond their roles as helpers and guides, coaches prioritize their well-being as a testament to the transformative power of their practice. Whether immersing themselves in nature, cultivating mindful self-care routines, or fostering emotional resilience, they recognize the interconnectedness of personal health and effective coaching. A little self-coaching has been known to have great effects!

Also important is the need for the coach – openly and often – to express the values that serve as guiding beacons in their work: vitality, joy, authenticity; sustainable growth, creativity, happiness, and gratitude. These values not only inform their coaching approach but also inspire others to embark on their journeys toward greater well-being and fulfillment when they witness it firsthand.

For some, the heart of what they do lies in a genuine desire to offer something meaningful to the community – however, the coach still emphasizes the importance of building relationships regardless of who they are coaching. Be it a group or one-on-one, our judgment-free/non-prescriptive intervention is always based on support rather than fixing. By creating judgment-free spaces and encouraging clients to explore their solutions, they facilitate transformative journeys where clients become drivers of their change.

As coaches, we recognize the inherent curiosity within all individuals, and we embrace the opportunity to guide them on their wellness journeys. Rather than providing a simple definition of our roles, we aim to infuse passion and power into our coaching sessions, fostering renewal and growth for both ourselves and our clients. Health and wellness, we understand, are deeply personal and multifaceted, encompassing physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.

Through the art of coaching, we empower clients to explore their inner wisdom and potential, utilizing tools such as open-ended questioning and appreciative inquiry to facilitate self-discovery. We prioritize our own well-being as a testament to the effectiveness of our practice, recognizing the interconnectedness of personal health and effective coaching. By openly expressing our values and fostering authentic relationships built on trust and mutual respect, we inspire transformative journeys toward greater well-being and fulfillment. Whether working with individuals or communities, our approach remains judgment-free and supportive, empowering clients to become drivers of their own change.
