Harnessing the Brain’s Power to Achieve Goals

As a coach or trainer, you will want to learn how to awaken our highest potential by harnessing the power of our thoughts to achieve goals. You will find this very helpful as you work with clients making behavior changes.

The reality: we are only a thought away from significant change. Experiencing well-being can be dialed in at the level of our brain. Thoughts create emotions and emotions color our every life experience. Emotions are what give our life meaning. The unpleasant ones inspire us to take on challenges; the pleasant ones bring us peace and happiness.

How to Use Our Thoughts Productively

Let’s look at how to take our thoughts and train our brains how to use these thoughts productively. We do this by shifting the thoughts that no longer serve us as needed; this allows us to successfully achieve our goals. In order to understand this, we have to acknowledge the work of theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. One of his most famous quotes states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another. Einstein also stated a belief that thoughts are energy and thoughts are constantly creating our life – from our thoughts come emotions and emotions are what keep us on track in life. They guide us to deeper happiness. Emotions provide feelings and insights into our thoughts and beliefs. They provide a sort of therapy for our thoughts.

Our thoughts are more numerous than you may realize; we generate between 50,000 to 70,000 of them each day, translating to about 35 to 48 thoughts per minute. In this

manner, we could say that even happiness is truly just a thought away. Unfortunately, most of our thoughts are negative due to the amount of stress in our lives. This stress comes from our jobs and relationships but also reaches into financial problems, health concerns, or our social media. For some of us, this results in critical judgments and negative self-talk.

But these outward actions of negative self-talk and critical judgments arise from how our brain processes and regulates our lives.

Dr. Masaru Emoto and Water Consciousness

The work of Japanese scientist, author, researcher, and photographer Dr. Musuro Emoto presented the hypothesis that human consciousness influences the molecular structure of water. In 1994, Emoto came up with the idea to freeze water and observe its crystalline form. He then photographed several samples of frozen water in various locations (tap water, fresh water from rivers and lakes, near big cities as well as water in areas of pristine nature. As expected, the water from these locations had different crystalline structures. Emoto performed experiments, playing music to water samples, ranging from heavy metal to classical music. He then looked at the effect of prayer on water; what he discovered is that the words and music contained a vibrational frequency that would influence the shape of the water molecules being studied. Words like love, peace, and happiness – as well as classical music – created amazing crystalline patterns. Other words, like hate, and war, created disfigured crystals; the result was the same for heavy metal music tests.

It is interesting to see the impact of our spoken word and unspoken thought patterns creating a vibration in water, at the very least it suggests that thoughts from our brain can impact our physical being. In this way, it is important to acknowledge the words we use and to be mindful of our thoughts.

Shifting Your thoughts from Negative to Positive

Whether we are aware of it or not, our thoughts may be the result of stress in our lives. Obviously, this can create an underlying negative tone in the body when we repeat many of our thought patterns based on this stress. Unfortunately, this can result in unneeded grief. Our negative emotions are often due to underlying anxiety, sadness, and anger that haven’t been processed properly. In humans, our emotions are normally processed by the amygdala – a small structure in the center of the brain. The amygdala responds powerfully to negative emotions which impairs the brain’s ability to engage in problem-solving. This may be why positive thoughts allow our brain to do more creative thinking. One way to help shift our thoughts is to surround ourselves with people who are uplifting; Some that study the brain believe that we take on the characteristics of the five people closest to us. Coaches are encouraged to talk with clients to find out what the social circle of the client entails.

Brain Pattern of Deep Thinkers

Neuroimaging of the brain has revealed a very specific brain pattern that is consistent with individuals who are more prone to deep thinking. An area in the frontal lobes or front part of your brain called the anterior cingulate gyrus display elevated activity in this region. Those with this characteristic may also tend to get stuck on thoughts that prevent them from letting them go.

Coaches should be aware of the ways we can reduce activity in this part of the brain. The prudent use of medications or supplements may be one approach, but neurofeedback is another non-pharmacological way to modulate this type of brain activity. Alternatively, learning how to meditate and become more aware of negative thoughts can be very powerful modulators of dark thoughts or stuck thinking.
