Best strategies to reprogram your self talk and subconscious programmingLearn How To Create a Compelling Self-image by Updating Your Subconscious Thoughts

This lessons is both the culmination and foundation of the work we do as Certified Life Strategy Coaches. As you saw in the Hemispheric Levels Template and the Spheres Chart with Identity in the middle, discovering and updating what images the subconscious “thinks” about who we are as an individual either supports our self-esteem, or not. This section will focus on defining your sense of self, who you are in the world and inside of your own mind. We want the internal image of self in both hemispheres to be current and accurate in portraying who we truly are in the present moment. Then we decide where we want to develop new skills, understanding, update old beliefs, and from here we can develop our mission and passion for being.

Reframing

Reframing is a valuable linguistic tool to gently re-direct, install or suggest other ways to look at a situation, event, or person – even within ourselves. It’s a way of creating new images by giving our client another perspective when they are “stuck” in life. Presuppositions that are useful filters are:

• Everything is useful in some context. – Keeps us from prejudice; opens up our box of thinking.

• There is no failure, only feedback – supports our learning from the past and moving forward with more awareness and confidence.

• Choice is better than no Choice – Allows for creativity and new and unfamiliar experiences to thrive.

• Behind every thought, feeling or behavior there is a positive intention – and the behavior

is most likely not getting us what we actually want. Reframes are the basis for most humor, putting a new twist on the meaning or changing the context of the interaction.

As a CLSC and effective communicator, this is an invaluable tool to influence change subtlety and powerfully. It open us the thinking about boundaries or previously imposed limitations of a problem. Often is the right hemisphere that can see a situation from a new perspective and has the quick-witted response.

Value Level Reframing with Softeners:

These are reframes delivered at the Value Level on the Hemispheric Levels of Experience Chart. These reframes increase the intensity to the value or identity level and are the most useful in the Self-Image processes that are following. Value reframes are ones that often create an “A-ha!” experience. Softeners are the language we use to deliver the reframe that allow the client to accept the new possibility through curiosity, choice and possibility. It is a way of giving options without giving advice.

Example: “So, I’m curious what if X really means Y?” “I’m curious…” is the softener.

Learning Opportunity: The Language of Reframing (thinking “outside of the box”)

Find a partner to practice with and add into your daily repertoire of thinking the questions, “What else could that mean that could be a positive support? Where else might that be useful, valuable or beneficial?” This skill building practice helps develop our creativity in thinking on the spot and being curious.

Person A – Make a complaint in the form of “I’m too lazy.” (bored, wish-washy, busy, shy, etc.)
Person B – Deliver a reframe by either changing the meaning of the experience or behavior, or finding a context where the experience or behavior might be useful.

Example:
Person A – I’m too lazy.” (Delivered in a tone of voice that makes it a negative quality about A.) Person B – “Wow, how wonderful that you take your time to make a decision before you take action.” (New possibility: Lazy could mean something beneficial)

RePowering Self

In many kinds of consulting, cheer leading, and coaching, well-meaning advice often is given to a client who wants change in their life to “Just do it!” Results are often sporadic, temporary and frustrating. Remember back to earlier in this course where we talked about the importance of influencing all Elements of a System: States of Being, Strategies of Thinking, and Behaviors. Hemispheric Integration offers the technology and understanding for answering the question, “Just How?”

RePowering self to be who you are authentically means clearing the mind clutter from old patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer serve us. Rather than being influenced and controlled from the Outside – in, RePowering self is to make a shift in thinking and behavior where the center if power and choice to be who we are comes from the Inside – Out.

It is another important sorting filter to discover where we might have given our power away, or have been brain-washed by circumstances as if they were true.

There was a client with the presenting challenge of “never having enough time for relationships.” She was in a doctoral program working in the field of science and brain research and was driven to produce, at the expense of her social life and often even her physical health. Her statement was, “What I do, is who I am.” Think about the presuppositions in that statement. If she stops “doing” she ceases to exist.

This is the DO → HAVE → BE sequence of thinking.

For example: “If I do it perfectly. I can get their approval. and then I will be OK.” Because this so depends on the opinions of others it doesn’t work in the long term.

We recommend the very powerful and effective sequence of BE → DO → HAVE.

Creating a Compelling Self-Image for a Specific Behavioral Change

One of the major benefits in this program is that we use the structure of how the brain processes information as our basic resource. When we understand and respect how our brain creates results, life is easier, less frustrating and we have the tools to be more proactive in our lives.

Learning Opportunity: Read “Creating a Compelling Self-Image in Current Reality” starting on page 163 of The Other Mind’s Eye: The Gateway to the Hidden Treasures of Your Mind. (located in the Spencer Institute Life Strategies Coaching Certification curriculum.

Next, read through the following process “Creating a Compelling Self-Image with a Specific Behavior.” Take yourself through the script in the context of your being a CLSC.

The goal is to have such a compelling and congruent image of yourself as a coach in both hemispheres of your brain that it fully supports your actions and plans to move forward in your career and life.

Creating a Compelling Self-Image for a Specific Behavioral Change

Purpose: To create a self-image that enhances a specific quality or behavior using information from both the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

1. Establish rapport and ecology for working together, and elicit what quality or behavior the explorer (client) would like to be different. Be specific. “What’s the new behavior that you want to be doing?”

2. Guide (Coach) asks, “What does the you look like that … (backtrack what the explorer wants to be different in their behavior or new sense of self)?” Elicit sub-modalities, what age the explorer is in the image, and which internal mind’s eye the explorer is “seeing” the image with more dominantly.

Useful Sub-modalities to create fine distinctions:

Visual: Color or black & white, Still photo or Movie, Distance, Clear or blurry, Location, Age of Person

Auditory External: Any sounds from the Image? If so, describe.

Auditory Internal: What are your comments or internal thoughts about the image and/or sound?

Kinesthetic: What is the physical feeling or response in your body?

Meta- Kinesthetic: What is your emotional evaluation of what you see, hear and feel?

Which Mind’s Eye is seeing this Image more dominantly?: Right__ Left__

3. Guide says: “Great, now set this image aside and gently cover that eye. Now, have a sense of you with this desired quality or behavior with your other internal mind’s eye. (Pause) Notice what is different in the second picture.”

Repeat gathering sub-modalities for the other mind’s eye.

Bring back the first image so that both images are co-conscious.

4. Guide says: “Now that you have access to both pictures, get a sense, or simply notice, which picture is more compelling?”

Identify one image as the compelling image and the other as the resource or information image.

5. Guide asks: “What information, skill, resource, quality, learning or feeling is in the resource picture that will enhance and enrich the image of the compelling you?”

Note: This is where you use your reframing skills. If there is a negative experience, you can ask “What skill or resource do you need to be sure to prevent that from happening again?”

6. Guide says: “In a way that is just right for you, bring that (backtrack resource) over now to become a part of the compelling image.”

7. Guide says: “Notice how having (backtrack resource) changes the compelling image of you. Note: Gesture up from foot to head ↑ to enhance the experience.

8. Guide asks: “What other information, beliefs, learnings etc….?” (Repeat steps 5, 6, & 7 until all appropriate information has been added to the compelling image.)

9. Guide have the explorer integrate the compelling self-image into both hemispheres by seeing the compelling image identically through each internal eye.

10. Guide directs the explorer to associate fully into the compelling image by saying: “Now, I want you to step forward into this compelling image of you. Experience being fully and completely this resourceful you.”

Guide says, “Breathe into the you now that has (recap qualities). Turn and face the current you, and send a message of encouragement from this compelling you.”

11. Guide has the explorer step back into the current self and receive the message of encouragement from the fully integrated compelling self-image.

Test and future pace (guide) the explorer to imagine in several other contexts in the future where he/she will be doing with these new behaviors, learnings, and resources.

Tell client that updating this self-image is an on-going process that can begin to happen automatically. When there is a new learning or experience or understanding, check to be sure the internal image has adjust to the current reality. This hologram or self-image now becomes your inspiration and wisdom to guide you now and in your future.
